Here's a quote: Florida allows for someone to use deadly force if they fear that they will suffer bodily injury or death at the hands of another. They DO NOT have to retreat, but can stand their ground (insert any John Wayne movie quote here) draw their weapon and use it to defend themselves
I am glad that you never did this in all your years of patrol, that you never used this as justification for ending the life of those in those cases where YOU did not fear bodily injury or death at the hands of another. As you said, Zimmerman did not have training --- you did. So you would not FEEL the same level of fear for bodily injury or death that he felt. This law allows one to STAND THEIR GROUND if THEY (not you, not me, not anyone else), but if THEY fear bodily injury or death. Families and home owners are constantly being advised by police officers that if they want to HELP stop crime in their neighborhoods, towns and cities - they need to get actively involved AND STAND THEIR GROUND. At no time is it ever said or implied that caring community members should get actively involved AND STAND THEIR GROUND, but only if their feelings of fear for bodily injury or death are comparable to others. Each person's fears are just that -
personal fears, personal feelings of fear of bodily injury or death. As a policeman/patrol officer, you should also know that IT IS NOT A LAW
that anyone who feels fear of bodily injury or death has to have training in how to handle it - these feelings vary in degrees person to person. And it would be super super nice if perpetrators only targeted as victims police officers or others WHO HAD TRAINING in how to properly, legally STAND THEIR GROUND, but sadly that is not the case.

Not going to like or dislike this. Just disagreeing. In eight years as a police officer, you should know that perpetrators of car prowls and thefts in neighborhoods often go unPENALized because, although the police can and do respond, there is usually not enough details/descriptions for them to locate and process them. You should also know, as an eight-year police officer, that one of the purposes of neighborhood watch programs/patrols is for neighbors to work together and be the eyes and ears for the police force. Any crimewatch sign clearly warns all new persons in the neighborhood that they are being watched, and all suspicious/unusual/out of the norm behavior is REPORTED. Observed and reported, to assist the police in prosecuting those perpetrators. ***One point of yours I agree with - how you perceive young people when they are out walking around. Not as suspicious behavior, but rather nothing but what it was -- young people out walking around. Because they can, because this is America. A few years ago there was a group of pre-teens/young teens in the neighborhood I lived in then. I saw them, and thought nothing of it. They're just walking, talking, stopping. Walking, stopping, talking. A young girl even told me --- what are they up too, why are they there? I did respond: they're just walking it looks like, leave 'em alone. THEY THEN WENT INTO another neighbor's open garage, pushed a motorcycle out, and then took off running down the street, all the while trying to get the motorcycle started. Fortunately for the family that owned this motorcycle, other nearby neighbors were very much aware of these people. They were silently watching, ready to respond if/when necessary. One adult yelled at them to put that down it doesn't belong to you. They dropped it on the street and took off, running faster, trying to get away, trying to avoid apprehension. Two other homeowners had jumped in their vehicles in pursuit. Not to shoot, not to kill - but to send a message --- in this neighborhood, they're watching, they respond and react and report. The kids were tracked to one of their houses, two miles away. Police were called, kids were caught in the act by credible witnesses, and then were processed. Had adult neighbors not acted in a proactive way (organized group or not), this neighbor's bike would of probably never been retrieved, and probably no arrests would of ever been made. ****And YES, neighbors and neighborhoods DO know this, because it has happened to them and their neighbors time, and time, and time again. Neighborhood watch people, neighbors of any kind {{{{organized or not}}}} who respond whenever something that MAY be suspicious goes on in their neighborhood - are willing to risk their life and limb in order to protect the quality of life in that neighborhood [as well as to protect the property, life and limb of all those in and around the neighborhood]. Homeowners and caring neighbors/friends (as well as family members of various ages) are often the victims of assault and murder if and when they resist perpetrators WHO MAY BE ARMED AND DANGEROUS, and/or who may be on a drug, anger or alcoholic-induced trip (or coming down from one). Just as they are often innocent bystanders who DARED to speak up, speak out against a perceived threat, it can and does happen where the stranger becomes the innocent victim - simply for being in the wrong place, at the wrong time. And/or making the wrong decision/response in a flight/fight scenario. WHATEVER THE CASE IS, no matter who the victim is, no matter who the perpetrator is - justice should be served. In this case, justice can prevail also, and if a jury finds Zimmerman guilty, then he should be prosecuted. But hopefully, any justice or conviction made will not be done primarily BECAUSE the victim was black, because he had a bag of skittles, or because he wore a hoodie. IF THOSE WHO CRY FOR JUSTICE are purporting that Martin died because of these three things and that's wrong -- that is not justifiable (and it's NOT!) ---
then how on earth can it be justifiable if the perpetrator is convicted because of the very same three facts they are saying about the victim which makes it such a travesty of injustice?
